Rep. Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) confirmed Monday he plans to resign from the House and won’t seek re-election in 2026.

His district staffer, Justin Cochran, filed petitions to seek the seat Monday before Moylan confirmed his plans to step away.

Moylan, 74, has been dealing with health problems, which appear to play a role in his decision to step aside. He said by text message he’s “getting better” and “ready to rock and roll.”

Moylan said he didn’t know when he would resign from the seat, but did not plan to serve out the remainder of his term.

The district includes Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Niles, and Glenview in the Cook County suburbs, including formerly Republican territory. Kamala Harris won the district by about six points last year. Governor Pritzker won it by around 17 points in 2022.

Republican candidate Joseph Johnson decried the move to pass the seat off to a staffer on the last day of petition filing.

“Illinois doesn’t need another handpicked insider chosen behind closed doors to represent the hard working families of the 55th District,” Johnson said in a statement. “Instead of giving voters a fair choice, Rep. Moylan waited until the last day of filing to clear the field for his chosen successor. This kind of backroom politics is exactly why Illinois voters have lost trust in Springfield.”
