As expected, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Schaumburg) entered the race for retiring Sen. Dick Durbin’s U.S. Senate seat Wednesday morning, bringing a $19.5 million dollar war chest with him into a quickly growing primary field.
Krishnamoorthi, 51, who was born in India, moved to the U.S. as a small child, and grew up in Peoria, was elected to Congress in 2016. He previously ran for State Comptroller, losing the primary in 2010 and a congressional primary to Tammy Duckworth in 2012, who he eventually replaced in the House.
“I’ve made it my mission to fight for families like the ones I grew up with. People who just want a chance to work hard and realize their dreams,” Krishnamoorthi says in his announcement video. “So I’ll never be quiet while billionaires like Elon Musk and a convicted felon deny the dreams of the next generation for their own egos and personal profit.”
Here is Krishnamoorthi’s announcement video.
He joins Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton and Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-Matteson) in the Democratic primary. Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (D-Naperville) is mulling a bid. State Treasurer Mike Frerichs announced this week he wouldn’t seek the seat.
No major Republicans have entered the race.
