Sen. Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago), one of Senate President Don Harmon’s top lieutenants, won’t seek re-election next year, multiple sources tell The Illinoize.
Cunningham, who represents the far southwest side of Chicago and suburbs, has become a trusted hand in the upper chamber for some of the most controversial pieces of legislation in recent years, including high profile energy bills.
Cunningham was first elected to the Senate in 2012. It is expected former Rep. Fran Hurley, who currently serves on the Illinois Labor Relations Board, will seek Cunningham’s seat in the Senate.
Cunningham couldn’t be reached Thursday.
