Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis, who served a term as Chief Justice from 2022-2025, will retire from the bench at the end of the month, the Supreme Court announced Monday.
Theis, 76, has served on the court since 2010 and has spent more than 40 years as a judge.
“I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to serve,” Justice Theis said. “It has been my foremost goal to further the Court’s mission of providing access to equal justice, ensuring judicial integrity and upholding the rule of law.”
Her retirement is effective January 29.
The court has appointed Appellate Judge Sanjay Tailor to fill Theis’ seat, making him the first Asian-American justice on the high court.
