A petition challenge of Rep. Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) has a few Republicans scratching their heads.

Niemerg failed to have his statement of candidacy notarized. Petition packets require a notary public to sign and stamp statements of candidacy and petition pages.

One attorney suggested the flaw may get Niemerg knocked off the ballot because it’s a clear violation of rules, another attorney said he will likely be ok.

Niemerg, a member of the ultra conservative “House Freedom Caucus,” was elected to the House in 2020.

Niemerg did not respond to a message from The Illinoize, but people close to him expect the challenge will be dismissed.

If he were bounced from the ballot, no other Republican filed to run, so Niemerg could run as a write-in or be slated by the party next summer. No Democrat filed to run in a district Donald Trump won by 53 points in 2020 (according to illinoiselectiondata.com.)
