Somebody keep Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-Hindsboro) away from the app formerly known as Twitter.
Miller has been repeatedly stepping in it in recent weeks and has solidified what I’ve been telling people since 2020: she’s not at all qualified for the job.
(Disclosure: I worked a primary race against Miller when she ran for the first time in 2020.)
Just this weekend, she posted what used to be called a “retweet,” who knows what it’s called in the dystopian Muskian hellscape that Twitter has become, sharing a clip from an interview with progressive Chicago Congresswoman Delia Ramirez.
Ramirez had created some controversy recently when she called herself a “proud Guatemalan” instead of an American in a recent speech. Her parents came to the United States, illegally, Ramirez has admitted, from the central American country.
In her response, Miller write Ramirez was someone Immigration and Customs Enforcement should “REMOVE.”
That’s right, a member of Congress called for the deportation of an American citizen member of Congress because she’s…brown? Because Miller disagrees with her? It’s more of the racist tropes that we’ve been seeing far too often from the Congresswoman who made her entire political brand about carrying around a purse emblazoned with Donald Trump’s name.
Imagine the idea of a member of Congress calling for the deportation of Sen. Tammy Duckworth because Duckworth was born in Thailand. Maybe she thought the late Sen. Paul Douglas, who was born in Salem, MA, the home of the Salem Witch Trials, rode around Washington on a broomstick. That’s how ridiculous this has all become.
But sadly, racism and Islamophobia have just become part of Miller’s lexicon.
Miller received significant criticism earlier this year when she complained about a Sikh, who she mistakenly referred to as a Muslim, shouldn’t have been allowed to give the opening prayer in the House of Representatives.
Freedom of Religion only counts when it’s for white Christians, I suppose.
Miller also exposed her own density this weekend by claiming Illinois, which hasn’t elected a Republican to statewide office in 11 years, is actually a “red” state. To back her claim, she posted a map of townships across the state and how they voted. Heavy Republican support in rural areas made the much of the state appear Republican.
But that math is a funny thing, isn’t it?
Perhaps the Congresswoman, who grew up in suburban Naperville, needs to be reminded that literally two thirds (66%) of the state’s population lives in Cook County and the five collar counties. And, sadly, corn doesn’t vote.
Republicans are disadvantaged in legislative and congressional races by gerrymandering, which (I think) was the point of her post. But to call Illinois a red state when her party continues to scare off moderate suburban women with no self awareness shows how deeply unserious Mary Miller is.
You could have had Rodney Davis, you know.
I wish Mary Miller were an outlier for Republicans, but I fear what you see is what you get in today’s GOP.
