The Democratic primary for State Comptroller is growing and may have additional entrants in the next few days or weeks.
Rep. Margaret Croke (D-Chicago), who earned the endorsement of the Cook County Democratic Party, is already in the race.
She was joined Monday by Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim, who leaned into her relationship with outgoing Comptroller Susana Mendoza.
“Our current Comptroller, Susana Mendoza, turned this office around, clearing the bill backlog, earning nine credit upgrades, without sacrificing worker protections,” Kim says in her announcement video over b-roll of she and Mendoza taking a selfie together. “Now, I’m ready to build on that progress.”
“Tell me that wasn’t an endorsement without actually being an endorsement,” one top Democrat texted Monday.
We’re told at least two other Democrats could be entering the race “soon.” Sen. Karina Villa (D-West Chicago), who also sought the Cook County Democratic endorsement, and Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego) are both considering jumping into the race, we’re told. Neither Villa or Kifowit responded to messages from The Illinoize Monday.
Champaign County Auditor George Danos is also reportedly considering entering the race the race.
No Republicans have publicly floated their names for a seat that’s open for the first time since 2010.
